The Department of Early Childhood is partnering with 26 Family Resource Centers (FRCs) throughout San Francisco to ensure a healthy start for the city’s children. FRCs play a vital role in fostering community connections and encouraging outdoor play. To support this mission, DEC is co-hosting a series of free Celebrating Young Children Events over the next month, offering more play and learning opportunities for families across the city.
The kickoff event, the Colors of Unity Festival, was a fantastic success and was organized by the Chinatown Family Resource Collaborative, including APA Family Support Services, Wu Yee – Joy Lok FRC, and Gum Moon – Asian Women’s Resource Center. It drew hundreds of families to Waverly Place, located between Washington and Sacramento, for a day filled with outdoor activities such as puppetry, face painting, music, and dance. The performances and hands-on activities created a lively atmosphere for children and their families.
Attendees enjoyed lion dancers, traditional Chinese performances, and music from various local groups, including Self-Help for the Elderly, the San Francisco Dance Group, and the Lion Dance Me and Sunset Dance Groups. DEC’s Deputy Director of Child and Family Well-being, Theresa Zighera, shared insights with families alongside Chinatown community leaders and District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter. Theresa highlighted DEC’s role in creating partnerships and providing the resources needed to host such impactful city events.
The Celebrating Young Children events will continue to be a free and accessible resource for families, thanks to DEC’s commitment to building community. By offering activities that reflect the cultures and histories of families, we create valuable opportunities for engagement and connection throughout the city.
