Increased Licensed Child Care Capacity in San Francisco

In 2022-23, DEC funding supported 17 grants to build new early care and education facilities that will create space for 552 additional children. What’s more, 323 of the 552 new available childcare slots, 59% of the total, are specifically for infant and toddler care. The increased emphasis on infant and toddler capacity intentionally meets the critical need in San Francisco.

Though statewide licensed capacity has declined since 2019, San Francisco defies this trend. DEC’s investment in new facility development has produced one of the greatest expansions in local licensed capacity that San Francisco has ever seen. Children need care and education, and ensuring that there are enough licensed child care programs to meet that need is a critical part of making San Francisco a great place for children and families.
