Popping-Up with the People: Bringing Information, Resources and Joy to the Bayview Pop-Up Village’s Youth Future Zone

The Pop-Up Village is a site activation project that harnesses the power of design to bring together people and programs in vibrant and thoughtfully selected public spaces. Its mission is to create a village of civic resources for under-resourced communities so they can thrive.

Pop-Up brings together a constellation of programming—health and wellness, youth and family, retail, food, and education resources—in customized buses, vans, pop-up shops, and other types of mobile architecture and nature throughout the Bay Area.

The Bayview Pop-Up Village takes place on the second Saturday of every month from 1pm-4:30pm at the beautiful Southeast Community Center in the heart of the neighborhood on 1550 Evans Avenue. A day at a Pop-Up event might include joining a knitting circle; watching and tasting a cooking demonstration; getting a chair massage, foot soak or acupuncture session; receiving a health check-up; creating an arts and crafts activity with your little one; or taking a family photo. There is a barber on site for Dads and you can even get an ultrasound picture of your baby-to-be!  While everyone is welcome, this event specifically focuses on Black pregnant people, celebrating community, and offering opportunities for families to engage in self-care and get valuable resources and services for their families.

Since its inception, DEC has been an “Anchor-Partner” at the Bayview Pop-Up Village. As an Anchor Partner, we play a crucial role in program design and vendor curation, marketing and promotion, and provide operations support on the day of the event. Specifically, we coordinate the Village’s Youth Future Zone (YFZ), which focuses on expecting parents, families, and children from birth to seventeen years old.

At each event, we host a DEC table offering comprehensive information and resources on how to access City-funded early care and education, Family Resource Centers, and child development resources. But the support doesn’t stop there. As the recruiter and coordinator of Youth and Future Zone vendors, we ensure our funded partners are readily available to connect with interested families. Instead of leaving with just a website, phone number, or email address, families can meet the dedicated professionals who deliver these services right then and there!

Some of our regular vendors at the YFZ are 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic, Children’s Council San Francisco, Compass Family Services, Edgewood Center for Children and Families, Family Connection Centers, Family Support Services, Good Samaritan Family Resource Center, Instituto de Familiar de la Raza, Mission Neighborhood Centers, Safe and Sound, Tandem Partners in Early Learning, and Wu Yee Children’s Services. Our co-anchor partner for the YFZ is Ain’t I a Scholar, who gives out free books for children and supports activities and activation for children 0-17 by providing leadership and volunteer opportunities for Middle School and High School Students.

We are so proud to be a part of The Pop-Up Village family and hope you will join us at an upcoming event! Check out the Pop-Up Village Events page to find out when the next Bayview Pop-Up Village is taking place and for more information about other Pop-Up Village events all over the Bay Area!
